Amblyopia Success Story
Most of you know that Paige was diagnosed 3 years ago with Amblyopia... which is basically when one eye is stronger than the other and over compensates for the weaker eye, thus causing the weak eye to quit developing...
When Paige was 6 years old she had 20/20 vision in her right eye and 20/120 in her left eye. According to her eye doctor, she was legally blind in her left eye. Luckily, Amblyopia is reversible, or at least...treatable, f caught early enough and treatment is agressive. For the past 3 years Paige has been in glasses, patching her good eye, using eye drops, and even eye shields to force her left eye to catch up with the right eye.
Today we had a visit with her eye doctor. They removed the filter that was on her right lense and then tested her vision. After all was said and done they have concluded that Paige's left eye is as good as it's going to get. Her doctor feels that at age 9 her eyes are fully developed and there is nothing else they can do to make her vision any better. Her acuity is...drum roll... 20/20 in her right eye...and 20/30 in her left! THIS IS SO HUGE! Her doctor said that she should continue to use her glasses for 3 reasons... #1. to protect her good eye from injury. #2. to prevent her left eye from weakening again. #3. to prevent her left eye from getting "lazy."
However, she said that her vision is good enough that she doesn't HAVE to wear h
er glasses... so she can wear them, or not... it's her choice. We opt to have her wear them for near sighted work, reading, homework, computer, TV...etc. She's ok with that!
Now... on to Cole. He was just diagnosed with Amblyopia. ARGH! I wonder if it runs in the family! His vision defecits are in both eyes... but he is already LOVING his eye patch! We are hoping to get his vision corrected as successfully as we did Paige's!
